Hidden away in a small valley at 700m above sea level, cerdeira was a village of schist houses at risk of disappearing after agricultural acitivity was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century. Almost 300 years old, the village was built by courageous people, farmers who lived off the land and who, even if they left in search of a better life for their families, would always come back and visit their home.

Your experience can definitely vary as I can see how this could be fun for families or magical or romantic spot but maybe only in Spring or Fall or when temperatures aren't high. In August with high temperatures the whole village was miserable since there is no AC. They provide a fan but it didn't do much. We stayed 3 nights and we didn't sleep any of them. The first day someone was doing renovation and hammering on rocks all day long and we find out it is privately owned land next to our unit and whoever owns it was banging away on rocks all day long. We feel like this sort of intrusion should have been mentioned ahead of time as we would have booked something else. From that point forward we had to change our plans and find things to do away from the village. Original plan was to unplug, relax, enjoy nature and read, etc. Our neighbors also loved smoking cigarettes nonstop so having to leave windows open due to heat all we got was cigarette smoke instead. Did I mention the bat yet? On our third and last night a bat flew through the open window and was flying around the bedroom as it couldn't figure out how to get back outside. We tried calling the after hours emergency phone numbers numerous times but one of the numbers didn't appear to work and nobody answered the other number. Being middle of the night and a couple hours later we gave up and slept on the couch and floor downstairs and prayed the bat wouldn't find its way to the lower level. Although it created some life long stories it wasn't what we had in mind and lack of after hours emergency contact in remote location like this is unacceptable

Absolutely a must do. The whole village is basically houses restored by the Home for Creativity. Quiet and ideal.

Thank you for a lovely stay! We stayed at Cardeira - Home for Creativity, a group of 8 (including 2 kids) for 3 nights. The stay exceeded our expectations in every aspect - the views are stunning, the houses are well equipped and beautifully designed. Irene, from the reception team, was very helpful, efficient and kind - thank you Irene for your recommendations - we loved the restaurants and activities! Next time we hope to participate in one of the workshops. Thank you for wonderful memories.

Our stay at Cerdeira - Home for Creativity was completely unexpected and absolutely incredible. Getting there is an adventure in itself, with a scenic drive up a steep, one-lane mountain road that was quite enjoyable. When we arrived, the sight of the stone homes built into the mountainside felt like something out of a fantasy novel, adding to the charm of the place. The property itself was breathtaking. Our cottage was beautifully designed with lots of natural wood and live-edge accents, and it had all the comforts you could ask for, including a kitchen and two balconies. It was like being immersed in nature, surrounded by the mountains and forests of Portugal. One thing to note is that parking is a bit of a walk from the cottages, so packing a smaller bag for the trek up the stairs is helpful. We were glad we brought some groceries, as the remote location means dining options are limited, but that only added to the experience. We enjoyed a lovely dinner on our balcony with incredible views and woke up to a mystical fog, making the experience even more magical. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge in the middle of our trip. Overall, a truly fantastic and unforgettable stay.

This place is undoubtedly worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. The concept of this space is truly unique and unparalleled. I was absolutely thrilled. As for the conditions: in winter, the stone houses can be quite chilly, so you need to heat the stove—which, in itself, adds to the charm and atmosphere. One challenge was finding dinner, as the on-site restaurant was closed, and all nearby restaurants required reservations in advance. Additionally, the electric car charger was out of service. However, all these minor inconveniences are more than outweighed by the uniqueness of the location and its one-of-a-kind ambiance. Thank you! I will definitely be back.

Beautiful village. Very nice house, fully equipped, perfect heating system (in February it is needed...). Very pleasant balcony. Excellent breakfast and dinner. Last but not least, the people in charge have been amazingly helpful. Many thanks!

Our unit was very spacious with double balconies one on the side and the other in the front. We enjoyed our stay, it was relaxing and peaceful. The up and down wore us down, being we're just about to turn 70 in good shape. It was a pleasant experience.

We only got to stay for 1 night this time and the weather was a bit sad but what a beautiful place to stay and disconnect to reconnect to self and nature. Service was very friendly and accommodating (I had my service dog with me). Breakfast was lovely (and the cake!!!) and so was the area hiking. Would love to come back for longer and get to enjoy the natural pool. Thank you!
